Android KitKat climbs to 8.5 percent share, Jelly Bean rules at 60.8 percent

Google has released its monthly report revealing the platform distribution numbers for Android. According to Android Developers blog, KitKat 4.4 has reached a share of 8.5 percent, which is up from 5.3 percent last month. Jelly Bean 4.1.x, has a share of 33.5 per cent which is the highest among all Android OSes. Surprisingly though, there are more Android 2.2 Gingerbread devices than Ice Cream Sandwich devices.

Another chart on the Developers blog states that the most common screen resolution used on Android devices is hdpi (ie resolution of at least 480×800) at 34.8 per cent across screen sizes. This is followed by mdpi (ie resolution of at least 320×480) at 21.1 per cent across screen sizes.

Last month, Google revealed that Kitkat had gained the most as its share of 2.3 percent rose to 5.3 percent in the month of March. It was largely attributed to Samsung and LG releasing phones running KitKat out of the box. These included the flagship Galaxy S5 from Samsung and LG’s L70 and L90 smartphones which were launched in March in India.
