While Nokia continues to keep the suspense up about the alleged Android smartphone aka Normandy, our curiosity may soon come to end with a possible announcement from the company. According to TheVerge, Nokia may finally unveil Normandy at the Mobile World Congress next month. The company has reportedly started sending invites out to the media for a press conference to be held on February 24.
But we would advise you to not get too excited as the invite does not specifically hint what the company may possibly announce. Some rumours claim that Nokia may launch the Verizon Lumia Icon handset for Europe, which is quite unlikely. Moreover, Microsoft may not have any big announcements at the MWC, as it will be detailing its Windows Phone 8.1 OS at the Build conference in April.
There have been a series of leaks and rumours around Normandy and most of them revolving around whether it will be an Android or a Windows Phone device. We have seen several engineering renders of the Normandy, some displaying it to be dipped in multiple colours, matching the Asha series, and some showing off the forked version of the Android UI that the device will house. On the other hand, another leak shows Normandy’s UI sporting striking resemblance to Windows Phone.
With Nokia’s hardware division being sold off to Microsoft, we wonder if a Nokia Android device is even possible. However, there have been wide speculations that hint at Nokia pushing out its low-end Asha series running on Android OS, camouflaging it with a completely different UI, something we’ve seen Amazon do in the past. On the other hand, company’s high-end Lumia device would still run Windows Phone 8 and its future versions.
